This June, the Gunnison Valley will be celebrating the 8th Annual Gunnison River Festival. Rivers of the Gunnison Valley are an invaluable resource to our region of the United States. Waters forming the Colorado River Watershed travel from high in the Rocky Mountains and from sources south and west, through the Grand Canyon and on to Mexico. For hundreds of years this resource has played a major role in our natural and human history. Here in Gunnison, we take pride in our river basin, and we “Celebrate our Rivers.”

On June 24-27, 2010 we will host this family friendly event at the Gunnison Whitewater Park and in Almont at the confluence of the Taylor and East Rivers. As the festival has grown over the years we have remained focused on families, youth and the environment. Our events include world class and amateur athletes, recreation enthusiasts, anglers, and volunteers. In 2010 our partnership with USA Freestyle Kayak (USAFK) as a sanctioning entity brings the kayaking events to another level. Together with artisans, musicians, educational booths, food, beverages, and a fantastic “Fun Zone” for kids, it is truly a great weekend and we invite you to be a part of it with us. It is fun and exciting for everyone.

On Saturday June 26 the Gunnison River Parade will lead the procession down from North Bridge to the Whitewater Park. Racing behind them is the famed “Race for the Golden Paddle” – the Competitive Raft Race. Saturday is one entertaining river event after the next…Raft Rodeo, Freestyle Kayaking, Big Tricks, Boater X, and of course the infamous HOOLIGAN Race. The Taylor comes alive on Sunday with the Upper Taylor Downriver Race, and the Lower Taylor Gamblers Run from 5 mile bridge to the Confluence, with a Grand Finale and Closing Ceremony hosted by The Almont Resort. WOW!
